Moving soon? Or have you been bitten by the KonMari bug and can’t stop decluttering your house? If so, you may wonder what to do with unwanted furniture. Getting rid of it can be a downright pain, especially for larger furniture items.
To make your life easier, I’ve rounded up a list of Salt Lake-area charities that will actually pick up furniture items from your house. That’s right. No more trying to fit furniture in your own vehicle or borrow a truck on the weekend. It’s a win-win: you get rid of unwanted items and help other people at the same time. (Note: many thrift stores such as Goodwill, Salvation Army, and more offer furniture pickup as well, but they aren’t the focus of this article.)
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah
UPDATE: BBBS NO LONGER ACCEPTS FURNITURE DONATIONS
Habitat for Humanity ReStore
Habitat for Humanity here in Salt Lake sells affordable furniture, appliances, and building materials at well under retail price. The proceeds of these sales help the charity buy new building materials to build homes for those in need.
You can donate furniture, appliances, building materials, and more items that are in good condition. A complete list can be found here.
Contact Habitat for Humanity at (801) 344-8527 to set up a donation pickup.
Utah Association for Intellectual Disabilities
The Utah Association for Intellectual Disabilities (UAID) helps those with disabilities acquire new skills and build relationships through workshops, community activities, and more.
UAID is happy to take your gently used clothing and household items, including furniture. These items help them generate revenue to serve those in their programs.
Just call 1-877-900-UAID to schedule a pickup (they also periodically send out mailer cards telling you when a truck will be in your area).
International Rescue Committee
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) works hard to help refugees from all over the world resettle here in our area. Gently used furniture makes a big difference in setting people up with a home rather than just a place to live.
IRC needs couches, armchairs, dining sets, microwaves, and more. However, please note that they do not accept mattresses or bed frames, sleeper sofas, refrigerators, stoves, and glass-top furniture. A more complete list of items can be found here.
You can also see their donation pickup area here. If you’re within the pickup boundaries, just call 801-883-8482 or email [email protected] to schedule a pickup.
Catholic Community Services
Catholic Community Services helps the homeless, refugees, immigrants, and veterans with housing needs.
They’re in need of new or slightly used couches, chairs, dining sets, dressers, night stands, end tables, and more. They may also be able to take other small household items like pans and laundry baskets, depending on their current needs. Lists for different groups’ needs can be found here.
Donation pickup can be scheduled by calling the numbers at the bottom of this page.
Spring Back Utah
You may have noticed that most charities do not accept mattresses, so it’s hard to know what to do when you’re done with them. Spring Back Utah has an ingenious solution to this problem.
For just $10, Spring Back Utah will pick up your mattress and recycle it. There are two benefits to Spring Back Utah’s program. First, it keeps mattresses out of landfills, and second, it gives job training and income to those in need.
To schedule a pickup, just go here.
I hope this makes your decluttering job a little bit easier. If you know of any other local charities that do furniture pickups, please let me know.

Unfortunately, none of these are doing pick-up donations during Covid-19. Who knew that it would be this hard to get rid of unwanted couches? I have no idea where to take mine since the date that I’m moving is already booked for drop-off appointments.
Another awesome organization is The Painted Chair project. They accept donations of used furniture and re-purpose them in apartments for young adults who have aged out of the foster care system.
